BUDAPEST NEWS

Nice weather and a peaceful weekend

The demonstration at Saturday was successful (peaceful) with several thousand people participating. Yesterday the Budapest Marathon took place, and except from some angry cars (who does not like lines and closed roads) it all went perfect. The weather has been really nice lately in Budapest, except from the fact that it was quite shady Saturday.

Often people ask how cold it is in Budapest during winter, and normally we answer: "It is much colder than the temperature tells you." Somehow the wind in Budapest can make life really cold, even when it is 5-10 degrees, so therefore if you arrive to Budapest between October and March it is always useful to bring a warm jacket, just in case!

For the upcoming ten days it is though said to stay quite warm (15-18 degrees during daytime), but there might be some clouds and maybe some rain sometimes!

Big demonstration coming on October 4th

On the 4th of October, which is the World Anti-Violence Day, Magyar Tarka organizes a rally for human rights (against racism and so on). It starts at 15:30 by the Erzsebet Square (by Deak Ferenc Square, Le Meridien and Kempinski), and because of great publicity in the Hungarian media big crowds are expected to show up. The organizers has spoken of the event as a non-political event, therefore they did not want any political parties to be present.

Today the news was released that the Hungarian Prime minister Ferenc Gyurcsany will show up, though not as Prime Minister, but as a private person supporting the rally for human rights. Not everyone rejoices that Ferenc Gyurcsany will be present, but hopefully everyone will be able to peacefully and with respect remember what the day is really about; Anti-violence!

If you are in the area this Saturday except loads of people and we all hope it will be a great (and peaceful) rally for anti-violence and anti-racism in Budapest!

No need to panic, but pay attention!

Today there will be several demonstrations arranged in the center of Budapest, in the area of the Parlament, the Chain Bridge and the Heroes Square. There will be one gipsy demonstration, a group of motorbikers, a group demonstrating for bringing the peace back into the streets of Budapest, and one group will demonstrate against the current political leaders in Hungary (which is leftsided, led by Ferenc Gyurcsány). Hopefully everything will happen peacefully, but if you are around in the area, it might be that you want to take a turn to skip the biggest demonstrations. The demonstrations will be going on from around 14:00 and for some hours from there.

Two years ago the famous "Gyurcsány Ferench"-speach (Öszödi Beszéd) was published, and it led to major demonstrations and trouble in Hungary. Now, two years later people have still not forgotten about it, and that also has influence on the fact that so many demonstrations will take place today. You can read more about those protests and demonstrations in Wikipedia.
