Saint Stephen's Basilica

Saint Stephen's BasilicaThis is one of the most impressing buildings in Budapest. And amazingly enough, it is free entrance, so this is definitely a place to visit. They started its construction around 1850, and had a quite dramatic history (the dome fell down, so they had to start almost over again), before it was finally ended in 1905. It has received its name from King Stephen, the first Hungarian king, and the one who took care of bringing the nation to the Christian faith. The most famous article inside, is the right hand of exactly, King Stephen. You can check it out, but you have to pay a little to do so.

In the summer it is a nice place for some cooling, as the temperature is quite steady and fresh inside. Among the famous guests that have visited the basilica we can find Pope John Paul II. Another interesting thing is that the heaviest church bell weighs more than 9 tons. The former bell was taken away during the Second World War, and its successor only arrived in 1990.

If you would like to live in a hotel nearby, we can recommend Hotel Central Basilica.
