About Budapest

The name:
Buda and Pest, originally two different cities, were united in 1873. There are some different explanations about where the name Buda comes from. One theory says that the Hun king Attila had a son called Buda, and he was the one giving the name to the city. Another theory is that it may come from the slavic word Voda (water), and it somehow may derive from that word.

The name of Pest originates from the slavic word "Pjecs", which means oven or stove. They gave it this name, in remembrance of the ovens in which the people living here, burnt the bricks to their houses.

Other information: The city covers an area of around 525.16 km2 and has 2 million inhabitants. The Danube is a famous sign of the city, and it is all in all 9 bridges crossing the Danube within the borders of Budapest. Seven of these are car-bridges, while two are used by trains. It has two big Islands, the most famous is the Margaret Island. Budapest has 23 districts.

The city is often referred to as the Paris of the East, the Pearl of the Danube, the Queen of the Danube and the "Capital of Freedom."

At the Budapest slideshow you will find many pictures from the capital of Hungary.
