Gellert Hill - Gellert Hegy

Gellert Hill - Gellert HegyAt the Gellert Hill you can first and foremost enjoy the view over Buda and Pest, or Budapest! During daytime you can see across big parts of Budapest, and during the evenings you can enjoy the magnificent flash lighted city. The main attraction at the Gellert Hill is the citadel, made by the Habsburgs (see A brief history of Hungary) in 1851.

After the communist troops defeated the Germans in 1945 they wanted lots of honor and praise, so they told the Hungarians to build several statues for their glory. At the Gellert Hill you can see a lady holding a palm branch. This was originally made for the glory of the communists and for their help in bringing peace to the nation. There were some other statues raised as well, but they have been moved to the Statue Park). Since the fall of communism the statue has received a new inscription that says: "To the memory of all of those who sacrificed their lives for the independence, freedom, and success of Hungary."
