Early Christian Necropolis of Pécs (Sopianae)

Sopianae was the name of Pécs during the Roman time. People lived here from the second century, and this Christian Necropolis (graveyard) is from the 4th century. The gravechambers and chapels all testify about the lives and the faith of the Christians from this time. This is the most important Christian necropolis found outside Italy today.

Inside the chapels and chambers you can see wallpaintings in good quality. The oldest chamber is the one called Peter-Paul. They first discovered this in 1782. It was given the Peter-Paul name because of the wall facing the entrance. There you can see Peter and Paul pointing at a Christ monogram.

It was added to the list of World Heritage in year 2000, based on its value within cultural history.
