Old Village of Hollókö and its SurroundingsHollókő with its traditional folk archtecture, landscape and their great ability to protect it, were given a place at the UNESCO list of World Heritage in 1987. This is the capital of the Palóc people, who are said to be descandants of the Cumans, a nomadic Turkish tribe. Among others they are known for using lots of potatoes in the food.In this area you can find the Hollókő castle, a Post Museum, a village museum and several other intesting buildings and houses. But the most interesting is still the ability to go back in time, and get to be a part of an "older" world, and see how they lived and what life was like. You will meet with people in Palóc costumes, see folk dance and taste some regional food, made in the Palóc way. Hollókő, with around 400 inhabitants, is less than 100 kilometres from Budapest. To get there you can travel on M3 from Budapest as far as Hatvan, then along the main road no. 21 in the direction of Salgótarján to the junction to Hollóko, from which you only have to drive 17 kilometres to reach Hollókő.
