Pannonhalma and its Natural Environment

PannonhalmaThis sight is found of the Unesco list since 1996. It is the second largest territorial abbey in the world. The only one bigger, is Monte Cassino in Italy. Thought Hungarys first king Stephen is known as the one that brought Christianity to Hungary, his father Geza started a little during his time. He founded this Benedictine Monastary in 996. Today the oldest document containing Hungarian language can be found in the library at Pannonhalma. During the muslim period it was damaged and the monks had to leave the area. During communism it was confiscated, and it was left in bad shape. It was then renewed in 1995, and in 1996 it was elected among the World Heritage sites. Pope John Paul II visited Pannonhalma in 1996. During the popes stay in 1996, the famous restaurant Gundel served the food.
