Danube Bend

The Danube Bend, a collection of small cities to the north of Budapest, is a superb suggestion for a half day or a full day trip. As we understand from the name, here we can see as the mighty Danube is turning, or bending, and especially in Visegrad you can enjoy this view fully. In Visegrad you can also visit the Citadel, and the ruins of the once so beautiful palace, now open for tourists (King Matthias Museum).

Further up you can find Esztergom, a border city to Slovakia, so if you cross the famous Maria Valeria bridge, you will find yourself in Slovakia. This was the capital of Hungary, until it was moved to Visegrad, and later unto Buda. The most interesting sight in Esztergom today is the famous basilica, the seat of the Catholic church in Hungary. It is the largest church in Hungary, 3rd largest in Europe, and its inner area is more than 56.000m2. The alterpiece is the largest painting in the world made on a single canvaspiece.

Also belonging to the Danube Bend is Szentendre.
