Eger

Eger is a city in the north-eastern part of Hungary. It is a city with rich traditions, an entertaining history, nice hotels and lots of wine. The center of Eger is not to big, so this is an ideal place for relaxing, excursions and winetasting in Hungary.

Eger is located approximately 150 kilometers away from Budapest and it can easily be reached using bus, train or car.

Attractions & activities

The Castle of Eger was used as the Hungarian fought the Turks in the 16th century. Here we can hear the story of how the Hungarian ladies threw Goulash soup at the attacking Turkish troops, and the famous wine Bikavér (Ox blood) has also received its name as the turks though the Hungarian troops had been drinking ox blood (due to the fact that they were red around their mouth). The truth was that they simply had been drinking red wine!

Szépasszonyvölgy (Valley of the pretty lady) is the name of the famous winecellar area in Eger. Here you can taste wine from several cellars and you can grab good bites of food to eat. It is quite touristic, but still it is a wonderful experience for those who like wine.

Egerszalok is the name of the area where you can find the famous Salt Hill Thermal Spa. This is a very specialy Thermal Bath in Hungary and you can enjoy both indoor and outdoor pools, in addition to saunas and treatment possibilities.
