Caves of Aggtelek Karst

This sight has been on Unescos list of World Heritage since 1995. In this area you can find more than 1000 caves, and inside them some of them you can find small streams of water throughout the entire year. The most famous cave is the Baradla cave. This forms the most important drop cave system in Europe, extending for 25 kilometers. The first written documentation from this cave origins from 1549. Since 1920 it has been a tourist attraction.

The caves are also important because of the animals living inside. In Europe there are 28 types of bats, and 21 of these can be found in this area. Some of the caves have big halls inside, and the Giants Hall, which can be found by the Jósvafõ entrance, is 125 metres long, 55 metres wide and 30 metres high. For those who suffer from asthma, the sanatorium in the peace cave is said to help.
