Fertö Cultural Landscape

Fertő Lake
The Fertõ lake is the second largest steppe lake in central Europe, around 36km long, and its width is between 7 and 15km. It is not very deep, at the deepest 1,8 metres, but it can be very warm. After Balaton, it is the lake in Europe easiest getting warm. Because of this it often reaches more than 30 degrees during summer time. The biggest part of the lake is on the Austrian side of the border, and on both sides you can find lots of reeds (phragmites). The Fertõ lake and its landscape has been on the World Heritage list since 2001.
It is well known for the animal life that can be found in the area, and several migratory birds find their homes here. In the area you can also visit several interesting sights and cities, for example the Eszterházy Castle in Fertõd and the beautiful city of Sopron.
During summer it is possible to sail and surf on the lake, and limited possibilies for fishing.
