Gluttonous Thursday mistake made up for

Cream Cafe & Restaurant
Cream Cafe & Restaurant
Last week we wrote about how we had to pay full price for a Brownie and a Coke Light at Cream Cafe Restaurant in Budapest. We complained to the restaurant afterwards, and they apologized for the problems and the misunderstanding – and invited us for a free dinner, to make up for inconvenience!

Visiting the restaurant again we looked forward to taste the food, especially since the menu looked very good on the first visit as well. The menu was full of delicious meals and we had no problem finding something that sounded good. We ended up with two soups and two main courses. The fish soup was really good and everything else was okay as well. It must be mentioned that the most expensive food on the menu costs less than 5000 Forints, which means that the restaurant should be enrolled in a “not-to-expensive” category!

If you ever walk around in the 7th district of Budapest, and maybe would like something to eat after a visit to the Synagogue in Dohány Utca (or the one in Kazinczy Utca), then Cream Cafe & Restaurant could be a place to grab something to eat!

Traffic jams in Budapest

Currently the prime ministers of Slovakia, Poland, Czech Republic and Hungary, together with representatives from Austria, Croatia, Slovenia, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria and Bosnia Hercegovina are meeting in Budapest to discuss alternative energysources. Due to this roads are closed down, and especially tomorrow as these guests will leave the nation the main road to the airport will be closed and this will make it a nightmare to get to and from the airport for everyone else!

There will also be quite some streets closed down in the center of Budapest during this period, and especially in the 5th district near the Roosevelt Square cars are not allowed to park.

This description is not to detailed, but the main point is that you should be aware of this, and if possible to avoid the inner parts of the 5th district today, and start your trip to Ferihegy tomorrow in good time before departure.

To avoid the traffic jams – use public transportation instead, and maybe grab a good bite in a Budapest restaurant!

Kiss Budapest 2010

Kiss Budapest
Kiss Budapest
I was sure that I had written about the fact that Kiss is coming to Budapest in 2010, but it seems as if I was mistaken. I did not manage to find an article about it anywhere, so I guess I must have been dreaming. Anyway – Kiss is coming to Budapest in May 2010 and they will perform at Budapest Sportarena. The concert starts at 20.00 and this is the event to visit if you like very hard music and some interesting make-up!

Jean Michel Jarre Budapest 2010

Jean Michel Jarre is about to come to Hungary again. I have a feeling that he likes Hungary, because he seems to come back every single year. Last year he was in Debrecen if I remember correct, and in December 2008 he performed in Budapest, in Papp Laszló Budapest Sportarena.

As he comes in 2010 he will perform in Budapest Sportarena again. If you missed his latest concert in Hungary or if you would like to see Jean Michel Jarre again in Budapest, this is your chance. The concert will be arranged May 24th, starting at 20.00.

Hungary Guide on the way

Lake Balaton
Lake Balaton
Our Budapest Guide remains true to its name and remains a Budapest Guide. Earlier we had some information about World Heritage sites in Hungary included in our guide, but this has now been removed from our page. But, the information has not been thrown away. In fact, it has gotten into a more correct and better environment, in our new Hungary Guide which is to contain information about Hungary, outside Budapest.

The Hungary Guide is still quite “poor” and it lacks a lot of information, but hopefully we will be able to gradually update it with entertaining and useful information.

The design is familiar, the same as our Budapest Guide has!

Poetic Abstract Art – Duna Palota

In the period between March 4th and March 27 visitors to the Danube Palace in Zrinyi Utca 5 can enjoy the exhibition called “Poetic Abstract Art by Zsuzsa Szikra”.

Poetic Abstract Art by Zsuzsa Szikra
March 4 – March 27
Danube Palace, Zrinyi Utca 5

The exhibition is connected to the Budapest Spring Festival

About the exhibition:
The relationship between the parts, the squares, is a most important part of the work of Zsuzsa Szikra, made in the abstract tradition. For example see the work ‘the battle of the colors’ in which we encounter a contrast but also a balance of green, purple and blue. The style of the painter is established and therefore she has her own place in contemporary art. The balance and contrast of the colors relates to mathematical formulas; a world in balance but also vivid and exciting. An example is ‘Saint Patrick’s Blue’ showing yellow, red and blue, differently placed but always close together. The exhibition gives an overview of watercolors, mixed techniques and prints.

Zsuzsa Szikra was born in Hungary and was schooled at the Hungarian University of Fine Arts in Budapest. She studied under Jeno Barcsay who created the famous ‘Anatomy for Artists’ . Barcsay made important constructivist, geometrical art and strongly influenced the work of his pupil, Zsuzsa Szikra. See for example his painting; ‘Courtyard of a Church’ (1945). Momentarily Zsuzsa Szikra works in Budapest, Paris and London.

International tourist day February 28

This coming Sunday people in Budapest can enjoy and take part in the International Tourist Day 2010. There will be free guided tours arranged around in the town on foot and using private buses, bicycles and public transportation. Most trips will start from the Heroes Square (every 90th minute – available in English and German in addition to Hungarian as well).

This is a great opportunity to enjoy a free guided tour in Budapest and to get more information about the city, especially for people who have lived in Budapest for a long time, but still haven’t heard to much about the city and its history and its attractions.

Full price brownie at Gluttonous Thursday

Yesterday was Gluttonous Thursday (Torkos Csütörtök) and I tried to enjoy as much as I could. Since long time ago I wanted to visit Angus Steakhouse restaurant in Kazinczy Utca, but as I did not find it on the list of restaurants participating I though I’d just walk over there to find out if it still existed. It did not…

But, a new restaurant has taken over their facilities, Cream Cafe Restaurant. I stopped to take a look at the menu and it looked really good. Earlier I had eaten a good lunch at Hild Vendéglő so I thought I’d try to stop by just for an easy desert, brownie with vanilia icecream. Safely inside I told them that I would only stay for a few minutes (enough to eat my brownie and to get an impression of the restaurant from the inside), and they could receive on those conditions.

I got my brownie, it tasted fairly okay and I wanted to get my bill. As I got it I noticed that everything was on full price. I asked how come, “after all, it is Gluttonous Thursday”. The answer I got was that since I had not reserved a table I had to pay full price! Lucky me who did not buy anything else, but still I feel sorry for others who might suffer from restaurants abusing the happy visitor looking forward to eat on half price.

It was a pity, because the restaurant looked really nice, but in my eyes they really fooled themselves of someone who might have wanted to return to the restaurant!

By the way… the rules for the Gluttonous Thursday says clearly that everything from the menu should be served at 50% throughout the entire day (such a thing as only to guests reserving a table does not exist anywhere)!

Gluttonous Thursday 2010 – today

We wrote about it yesterday and we write about it again today! Gluttonous Thursday 2010 (Torkos Csütörtök) has come upon us again, and that means that we can eat and drink at half price in a whole lot of Budapest restaurants today. Our plans are not yet ready, but I guess we will drop by at least 1 restaurant today, maybe more (time will show)!

A full list of restaurants participating can be found at menjunkenni.hu. Take a look, be prepared and watch out as well, as many restaurants often abuse this event to earn more money in different ways. And as you have been out eating, please come back and share your experience with us and our readers. We would be delighted to hear about your Gluttonous Thursday experience in Budapest or somewhere outside Budapest, so if you have visited a restaurant – please write a comment below to let us know what it was like!
