The Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest is hosting a major retrospective exhibition titled Vasarely 120 to celebrate the 120th anniversary of the birth of Victor Vasarely. Recognized globally as one of the most defining figures of kinetic art and geometric abstraction, the Hungarian-born artist who found fame in Paris is honored with an unprecedentedly comprehensive showcase. The exhibition brings together more than 140 works—including well-known masterpieces as well as rarely seen creations—with the domestic collection enriched by loans from the Fondation Vasarely in Aix-en-Provence.

Curated by art historians Veronika Pócs and Mónika Zombori, the exhibition traces Vasarely’s vast career path. It highlights his early days studying the Bauhaus movement in Budapest, his transition to designing commercial advertising posters in Paris during the 1930s, and his ultimate role in fueling a post-WWII visual revolution. Vasarely’s unique philosophy treated art not as an elite commodity, but as a systematic visual language designed to be accessible to everyone, seamlessly integrating into architecture, public design, and everyday urban environments through shifting grids and optical illusions.

In addition to the El Greco works permanently located in Budapest, the Museum of Fine Arts has also borrowed paintings from famous museums such as Museo Nacional del Prado and the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid, the Musée du Louvre in Paris, the National Gallery in London and the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC.

The goal of this exhibition is to teach you more about El Greco, and also to give you an understanding of the society and the environment in which he lived. You will, therefore, also see works from his son Jorge Manuel Theotokopulos, and from another contemporary named Luis Tristán at this exhibition in Budapest.

In the period from October 2020 until February 2021, a similar, but still very different exhibition will be hosted in the museum. The exhibition will greatly deal with the topic of abstract paintings, and besides more than 50 works created by Cezanne, we can also enjoy works created by Piet Mondrian, Theo van Doesburg, Vilmos Huszúar, Kazimir Malevich, Aleksandr Rodchenko, Nikolaus Pevsner, Mihail Larionov, Paul Klee, Lyonel Feininger, Moholy-Nagy László and Bortnyik Sándor.

In order to make this a great exhibition, the Museum of Fine Arts will cooperate and borrow paintings from institutions such as the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, Musee d’Orsay in Paris, the National Gallery in London, the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid, the Albertina Museum in Vienna, the Metropolitan Museum of Art és Museum in New York, and several other amazing museums.

The exhibition was shown in a similar way in Milano in 2017, but still, this will be a completely different exhibition with different objects on display. The exhibition is divided into three different parts.

Statues and reliefs depicting the king and his servants and officers, and objects belonging to them.

The tools and objects used in daily life by the contemporary elite

Distinctive tombstones and objects located in the graves of other important members of the community from the same period.

Totally, more than 140 artifacts will be shown at the exhibition, and many of them are borrowed from institutions such as the British Museum, the Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology, the Museum of Fine Arts in Vienna, and some others. But, if you want to check this exhibition while in Budapest, make sure to visit the magnificent Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest, located at the Heroes Square. You can easily get there using the metro as you travel to the stop Hösök tere on the yellow metro line.

Did you know that Rembrandt died 350 years ago (in 2019)? For that reason, lots of art museums bring extra focus on his name this year, and that is true for the Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest as well.

Those visiting the exhibition will be able to see works of Rembrandt, and next to his works, see the work of his pupils and thus discover the influence he had on them. The works are divided into the following categories: “Portrait, nude, landscape, figure sketch and narrative compositions.” As a result, you will not only see works of Rembrandt at this temporary exhibition, but you will also see works from some of Rembrandts pupils such as Ferdinand Bol, Gerbrand van den Eeckhout, Samuel van Hoogstraten.

The exhibition is curated by Bernadett Tóth, an art historian at the Museum of Fine Arts’ Department of Prints and Drawings.
