In some cities they warn you against drinking the tap water. Is it safe in Budapest, or should I buy bottled water instead?

This is one of the most common questions from people coming to Budapest. Since Budapest is in Hungary, which is by many considered Eastern Europe, there is an average thought in the mind of many people that the water is dangerous. I should say that many people ask the same question as they arrive to other even more famous in other parts of Europe as well, so it doesn’t necessarily has to do with whether people are skeptical to things in Hungary or not.
But, truth be told, the water in Budapest coming from the tap is totally safe to drink, meaning that you don’t need to worry about it being contaminated or dangerous. In other words, drink it freely and brush your teeth without worrying.
Some people say that it tastes a lot of chlorine. If you feel like that, buy some other things to drink instead. The fact that it is safe to drink doesn’t mean that you have to like it. But you can at least know that it is completely harmless!

The water in Budapest is treated and monitored according to high standards, and it is considered safe for drinking. The city’s tap water is sourced from natural springs located in the Buda Hills, and it goes through a thorough purification process before reaching households.
