Ryan Air, currently flying to Glasgow, East Midlands, Dublin and Bristol from Budapest, will stop flying from Budapest in the end of October 2010. After negotiations with the people at Budapest Airport, they could not agree on prices, and therefore Ryan Air pulls out. They also said, that if they would have gotten cheaper prices, more destinations would be added from Budapest. This did not convince the people at Budapest Airport!
If you want to travel with Ryan Air from Budapest, do it before October 31. If you would like to travel with Ryan Air from Hungary after that, you will have to travel to Balaton and the airport Sármellék, close to Hevíz and Keszthely.
So, I am writing this article sitting in Utrecht… Still we are not really suffering from the volcano sky, as our plane is supposed to return to Budapest on Monday, but the news does not bring us to comforting news. I just read on BBC and CNN that things seems to get worse, and that ash is still thrown into the air from the volcano at Iceland, so who knows?
For those of you planing to visit Budapest in the near future, keep updated and check out www.bud.hu and we will try to update our webpage as well with information about flights to/from Budapest. Hopefully things will get back to normal within shortly, but I must admit that I am a little bit worried!
Zoo BudapestNovember 12th, 2008, we wrote about the fact that Budapest Zoo will expand into Vidám Park (the Amusement Park), and because of this the Vidám Park will be moved to another location. Since then not so much has happened, but now we can start to see the start of this process taking place. Parts of the Vidám Park are currently used by the Zoo and the expansion is probably to continue until the entire area is used by the zoo.
One of the reasons for this is the fact that the Vidám Park is doing terrible (it has big financial problems), so the question is then only if it will be able to reopen somewhere else alter, or if it is headed towards a final end!
A new festival is coming up in Budapest in 2010. The arrangers of popular festivals such as Balaton Sound, Sziget Festival and the Volt Festival will now make a two-day festival in Budapest called Stargarden. The event will take place in the big garden next to Puskas Ferenc Stadium and they have managed to get some really hot shot names for the festival premiere in 2010, namely Deep Purple and Omega.
Much more information can be found about the festival at our dedicated Stargarden page.
It might be that you have not noticed it, but we have for sure noticed that Robert Pattinson is in town. Last Sunday during a guided tour we suddenly had to drive somewhere else, as the Andrassy Avenue betweeen Deak Square and Oktogon was closed down due to filming. At that I time I did not know who was there, but later I saw on television that Robert Pattinson was there recording scenes to a new film named Bel Ami. Who is Robert Pattinson? The main character from the incredibly popular Twilight films.
The recording will last for ten more days or something, and soon Uma Thurman is coming to Budapest as well, so if you would like to see either of them live, this is your chance in Budapest. The film Bel Ami is set for cinemas in 2011.
According to RTL Klub the reason for recording the film in Budapest was the cheap costs, renting the Andrassy Avenue for a day only costed 2,5 million forints.
At a clip I saw this morning of Robert Pattinson coming out from his hotel, it could easily be seen that he is living on Grand Hotel Royal, so if you would like to see him, maybe you should start there!
Tiesto is coming to Budapest in May and will perform in Hungexpo May 22nd. The Tiesto concert starts at 20.00 and there are tickets available to this amazing event still.
A new exhibition has come to the Museum of Etnhography, and it is entitled: The Kalevala through the Eyes of Hungarian Artists. This exhibition can be seen between February 27 and May 9th, 2010.
About Kalevala: (source: Wikipedia) The Kalevala is a book and epic poem which Elias Lönnrot compiled from Finnish and Karelian folklore in the nineteenth century. It is held to be the national epic of Finland and is traditionally thought of as one of the most significant works of Finnish literature. Karelian citizens and other Balto-Finnic speakers also value the work. The Kalevala is credited with some of the inspiration for the national awakening that ultimately led to Finland’s independence from Russia in 1917.
The name can be interpreted as the “lands of Kaleva”. The epic consists of 22,795 verses, divided into fifty cantos or “chapters” (Finnish runo).

We just thought that we would inform all our visitors that next Monday most shops will be closed in Budapest, due to the fact that it is March 15th, a national holiday in Hungary. You can read more about the day in our article: 15. March in Budapest.
