Hungary with bronze in U-20 World Championship

After loosing against Ghana Hungary got up again and played a very good bronze final against Costa Rica Friday. Most things worked, the only thing missing was the ability to shoot goals. So, when Costa Rica scored in the 82 minute or something it seemed quite hopeless!

But then Krisztian Nemeth managed to win a penalty in the 89th minute, and Vladimir Koman did not miss that great opportunity to make it 1-1. After this everyone expected it to be 2×15 extra time, but then suddenly they went straight for penalty kicks, and there Hungary did great, much thanks to Peter Gulacsi who saved 3 out of 4 penalties from Costa Rica players. And as he saved the 4th penalty the game was over and Hungary had won a bronze in the U-20 World Championship! Congratulations!

Yesterday the team returned to Hungary and loads of fans waited for them at the airport. Yet another time all we have to say is congratulations, and keep on playing this way!

Robbie Williams almost in Szeged October 20

Robbie Williams
Robbie Williams

I just read in Metropol some days ago that Robbie Williams is almost coming to Szeged October 20. In a way he is, because his London concert that night will be transmitted and shown live in the Central Cinema in Szeged that night. That means that Robbie Williams fans can see Robbie’s London concert live that night in Szeged. Inside the borders of Hungary Szeged is the only city giving this opportunity.

The concert is supposed to start at 21.00 (Hungarian Local Time) and the ticket price is around 5000 Hungarian Forints.

Bronze Final in U-20 World Championship

Unfortunately Hunary did not succeed in beating Ghana this Tuesday in the World Cup semi-final. The guys played a week first period, but in the second they woke up and it turned into a real interesting match, but they still lost.

So this Friday the guys will not play in the final, but in the bronze final. Their opponent will be Costa Rica, so hopefully if the Hungarians can keep up their good game from the second period of the game against Ghana they for sure have a great chance to win the game. The game starts 17.00 tomorrow (October 16, Friday).

The grown-up Hungarian national team yesterday won against Denmark in Denmark, in their last game of the World Cup Qualification, but it still did not help as they ended up on the fourth place in their group; behind Denmark, Portugal and Sweden.

Tomorrow there will a great game for Hungarians to see, and then next Tuesday Debrecen will play against Fiorentina in the Champions League in Budapest.

Hungary to Semi-final in U20 World Championship

Hungary did it again… they managed to beat a great team in the U-20 World Championship, this time it was Italy, and they ended up qualifying for the semi-final again Ghana. But, it didnt happen easily, or at least not without a fight!

In the 2nd minute Hungary got a penalty, and Vladimir Koman earned the trust and scored the 1-0 goal. And after this Hungary kept on playing well. And after Italy got two red cards, everyone thought it would be easy run. But, then Hungary got a red card as well, and then with only 8 minutes remaining Antonio Mazzotta got a nice ball in the box and scored a goal. So, then it was 1-1… and it remained like that. So yet another time Hungary went to overtime.

The first half of the over time went on without two much action. But, then the action begun! Krisztian Nemeth got a beautiful ball from Vladimir Koman, and the Liverpool striker did as he was supposed to, score! 2-1!

But, before the fans were able even to sit down Bonaventura ran with the ball and scored a goal for the italians. And then, just when everyone thought that now it will be penalties again (like against Czech Republic) Krisztian Nemeth got another beautiful ball, and yet another time Nemeth shot the ball in the net, and this time it proved to be the winner goal.

Hungary 3 – Italy 2

This means that Hungary has qualified for the sem-final in the U-20 World Championship, and this is a great thing for Hungarians not used to much success at the football ground. And I will just repeat what I wrote in my former post about the U-20 World Championhip; If Greece could win the European Championship in 2002, everything is possible in football, so maybe Hungary could go all the way to the top?

And by the way; tonight Hungary will play against Portugal in Portugal (in the official World Cup Qualification). I guess they do not have a chance, but let us at least wish them good luck!

Busó festivities at Mohács at Intangible Cultural Heritage List

Earlier today I read the news that Hungary had gotten a new place added to the World Heritage List. Then I looked up the official World Heritage List site of Unesco, but did not find it there. But, then I realized that Hungary indeed has got a new place/activity added to a Unesco list, but it is not the World Heritage List, but the “Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity”.

Busó festivities at Mohács: masked end-of-winter carnival custom
That is the title of what has been added to the Unescos Intangible Cultural Heritage list. But what is it? It is really a celebration welcoming spring, and leaving winter behind. It is leaving the evil and turning into the light. It is conquering the new, boys turning into men and girls into women.

It is also a commemoration of the Turks leaving Mohács in 1687. It is not supported by historical evidence, but legend has it that the Busó people (always wearing masks and with hidden identity) came and forced the Turks to leave Mohács. With their frightening customes they seemed even more scary, so this also influenced the end result of the battle.

This event takes place on Quinquagesima (or Shrove Sunday), the Sunday before Ash Sunday, fifty days before easter Sunday. It is not only a one day program, but that weekend it is carnival in Mohács and there are loads of programs happening. Normally this weekend is in February, but sometimes it can be in March.

DVSC (Debrecen) in the Champions League

For the first time in more than 10 years a Hungarian team qualified for the Champions League. DVSC (or Debrecen as most people know the team) managed to qualify with a great result in Sofia and some super goals in Budapest last week.

Now they will face more difficult opponents; Lyon, Fiorentina and Liverpool. All three teams will come to Budapest this fall to face Debrecen, and tickets are also available. Visit our Champions League page for more information about the matches, tickets and so on.

Hungarian soccer is on a good wave, and people are also really curious how the national team will do as they face both Sweden and Portugal in Hungary in the next ten days. If they win both matches, or grab at least 3-4 points they might be in danger of qualifying for the World Championship in 2010 (or at least reach the second place in the group and give them the chance to face another second place team in another group where the winner qualifies for the World Championship).

Day excursions from Budapest

We are happy to introduce something brand new on our page; day excursions from Budapest. As many tourists come for 5-7 days they often would like to use some time outside Budapest as well. One of their favorite activities as they travel outside Budapest is wine tasting, and that is why we have created to wine trips; wine trip to Lake Balaton and a wine trip to Tokaj & Eger. We are also proud to say that these trips are escorted by one of Hungary’s best sommeliers, making it something to remember for a long time.

We have also introduced a Danube Bend trip which hopefully will be a popular excursion as well!

Some people have already tried to Lake Balaton wine trip and they liked it a lot, not only the trip, but also the wine (making them buy several bottles with them home).

Hungary – Sweden, Hungary – Portugal: World Cup 2010 Qualification

The qualification for the soccer World Championship is soon finished, and Hungary is doing great. Currently they are located at the second place, and might end up in the World Championship if they continue the same way. But, first they will have to face some big opponents; Sweden on September 5 and Portugal on September 9.

Both matches will be played at Puskas Ferenc Stadium and I guess it will be extremely exciting matches – as Hungary has not been as close as this in a long time.

A new week in Budapest

A new week has started in Budapest and on the political arena lots of things are happening. This Saturday Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany said that he felt as a hindrance to the progress of the nation (as there have been campaigns fighting for his resignation since the day he started his work as prime minister), so he opened up for the parlament to find a new prime minister instead of him. Due to this the forint is expected to become weaker, at least until a new prime minister has been found. So… a new week in Budapest has just started, and the political world is as always a big mess!

I read an article once where they commented on a picture of George Bush as he started to be a president in the USA and then they commented on a picture of George Bush as he left the oval office. Big differences. The same can be said about Ferenc Gyurcsany. It is not an easy job, and I do believe that ruling Hungary must be an extreme job… Four years as prime minister here is the same as 10 years of work elsewhere!

Luckily the attractions of Budapest are not affected by this! They are still beautiful so as a tourist it is just to come and enjoy the beauties of Budapest, and maybe enjoy a good Hungarian restaurant as well.
