Christmas market Budapest

It might be that Hungarians are really happy about the opening of the Christmas market at Vörösmarty square today, but what makes them even more happy is that they managed to win 1-0 against Norway in football in Oslo yesterday. This was the first of two play-off matches, and the next match will be played at Groupama Arena this Sunday at 20.45. If Hungary manage to play draw against Norway or win, they can for sure celebrate the fact that they will qualify for their first international tournament in 30 years. But, let us not celebrate that yet, but hopefully the streets of Budapest will be filled with people Sunday evening celebrating a Hungarian success in football, something they have not been able to in the last years!

What is the Budapest Christmas market dates in 2014?

We have already received this question quite a lot of times, so here is the time to write an article concerning the date for the Christmas market in Budapest in 2014.

The truth is that the dates for the Budapest Christmas market in 2014 at Vörösmarty square have not been released yet. So, there is no good answer to the question yet, and normally these dates are only released late in September, or sometime in October. However, in general the Christmas market at Vörösmarty square opens somewhere around November 20th. But, in 2013 they delayed it a week, meaning that the Christmas market only opened on November 27th, so what will happen in 2014 is still not sure.

What you can know for sure is that if you arrive to Budapest in December the Christmas market at Vörösmarty square will for sure be open, but if you arrive in November you might have to live with a small risk of not being able to enjoy the market. If you arrive in the very end of November it should be there, but if you come somewhere near November 20th it might be that you can enjoy it (if they follow the tradition active until 2013), but if they follow the 2013 “tradition”, it might be that you will miss out on it.

Christmas market at Moszkva terSellers usually open their stands at early forenoon, and they close at early evening. However it is not one of the greatest Christmas markets, there is large selection and good atmosphere, so we offer everybody to visit the Christmas market at Széll Kálmán Square. Who knows? Maybe you would find the perfect gifts for your loved ones here.

Christmas market at Kalvin square

The big Christmas market at Vörösmarty tér will only open tomorrow, but there are of course many more markets available in Budapest. One such market is located at Kalvin tér.

The market at Kalvin square has already been opened, so we visited the market earlier tonight. It is not the biggest one, but for those who visit Christmas markets to eat chimney cake, drink hot wine, eat sausage and maybe some bread langos or real langos, this market has it all (but not so much more). So, not the biggest market, but very cose and nice, not to crowded, and with cheaper prices than at the big market at the Vörösmarty square.

The market will be open until December 24th. Here you can find some pictures taken at the market. For more information about the Christmas markets in Budapest, visit this page.
