Some Marcipan Museum pictures

On rainy days we often drop by the Marcipan Museum in the Hilton Hotel, just to spend some minutes inside escaping the rain. The entrance fee is only 400 Forint, and it is quite fun to be there, and therefore it is a nice activity during a guided tour on a rainy day.

In May we have had plenty of opportunities to do so, as we have had a lot of rain, and below you can see some pictures from such a visit. More pictures from the Marcipan Museum can be found at the Marcipan Museum page.

Tasting beer in Budapest

Hungary is known for Tokaj wine and quite some tasty red wines, but not especially for the beer produced in the nation. Beerlovers rather travel to Prague instead, normally! Unfortunately most breweries in Budapest are closed to tourists, and if they arrange guided tours it is so seldom, it is almost impossible to fit this into the schedule and timing of a tourist.

But, we have now composed a new “guided tour“, or a so called Breweri Tour. We must admit that it is not a big breweri, it is not an amazing, but it is a place where you can see beer production take place, taste special unfiltered 100% beer, and later taste three beers produced at the place, while eating some small stuff served next to the beer.

So, if you are interested in beer, like drinking it, and would like to see how it is made, then this trip is made for you! More information at our Breweri Tour page.

ELTE Faculty of Law and Political Sciences pictures

The 5th district in Budapest has become much nicer in the last years, and the latest improvements have made the inner city much cosier for an evening walk. Not long ago after eating at Fat Mo’s in Budapest we walked towards Kalvin Square, and along the way we bumped into the ELTE Faculty of Law and Political Sciences, and now as the square in front of it has been worked on, it all looks beautiful.

It was quite fun in fact, because next to us we saw some Greek tourists looking in their guide book for information about the buildling (read: ELTE Faculty of Law and Political Sciences), but they did not find anything. In the end they asked us, and we could explain them what this mysterious building in the center of Budapest was.

Take a look at the pictures yourself, and why not go for a walk here one evening, to enjoy the sight yourself? Maybe after a dinner in Karpatia or Pesti Lampas?

Terrible May in Budapest

I guess the topic says it all, but this May has been terrible in Budapest. It feels as if the sun has left the capital of Hungary the last weeks, and the last days it has been raining more than it normally does within a month. This has also caused great problems around in Hungary, and in some cities people have had to leave their houses, as they have been flooded with water. It can also be seen on the Danube within the borders of Budapest that much water has rained down in the last days.

The weather reports tell us that by the end of the week the sun might show up again, and I really do hope so. During a guided tour today I almost felt as if it was impossible to move up at the Gellert Hill, due to the wind. We could also see leafes all around, and trees that could not stand against the wind of the last days!

Cancellation updates from Ferihegy

Not long ago we always had to write about “strike at Ferihegy Airport” and all the problems this caused. Luckily no strikes are coming up nowadays, but there are problems with this vulcano again, which seems to be a returning problem all around Europe.

It is not to serious this time either, but today flights to London has been cancelled from Budapest Airport. There are some more problems around in Europe, especially in the Benelux area (Amsterdam Airport was closed for arrivals), but if the cloud keeps moving south, or to the east, more trouble might come.

So far only one flight is cancelled tomorrow from Budapest (15:30 to London), but time will show, and we will keep you updated!

Dinner at Fat Mo’s

Earlier this week we had the pleasure of eating a dinner at Fat Mo’s. As some of you know, the restaurant closed down last year, and some months ago it reopened, but now with brand new owners. So, the restaurant is yet again available, and it seems like this is a popular thing among the people around.

As we were in Fat Mo’s, most of the visitors seemed to be foreigner enjoying a beer while listening to the live music (starting around 22.00 every evening). We grabbed something to eat as well, and while the food was not the best we have eaten in Budapest, the restaurant still has an enjoyable atmosphere. The best thing we ate that evening was probably the tortilla with chicken, while the chicken wings we had as a starter and the brownie we ate for dessert was kind of forgetable.

Below you can see a little video from our stay at Fat Mo’s. For updated schedule of artists performing in the restaurant, check out Fat Mo’s Budapest.

Organ concert in Stephens Basilica

Last year there were organ concerts in St. Anna Church at Batthyány Square every Saturday. In 2010 these concerts have been moved to a fare greater and a much more majestic venue, the Saint Stephens Basilica. This will be a great event for those who would like to hear a great organ, a great singer, in one of Budapests most impressive buildings.

More information and ticket reservation can be done at our “organ concert in Budapest” page. This program can be combined with a dinner cruise at the Danube.

Good Italian restaurant in Vaci Utca

La Cucina
La Cucina

Not long ago I visited La Cucina, a quite new Italian restaurant in Vaci Utca. Since the restaurant opened we have always been curious about this restaurant, as it almost looks full as we pass by walking through Vaci Utca. Therefore we were looking forward to, and excited about the chance to finally sit down and taste the food in this Italian restaurant.

The price level is like a typical Italian restaurant in a shopping street, not very expensive, and not the cheapest of its kind either. The restaurant in itself is though very cosy, and it has a very nice atmosphere. You can see the chefs as they prepare your pizza, and it is a nice place to relax after getting tired visiting to many fashion shops.

Ceasar Salad in La Cucina
Ceasar Salad in La Cucina

We started out with a lasagne and a ceasar salad in La Cucina, and though they were starters, we could have stopped after the starter, because they were quite big both of them. Lasagne served in restaurant often taste only tomatoes, but this was better than the average lasagne to be found around. The Ceasar salad was just the way it should be, good!

Our maincourses were a pizza and a steak. The pizza was just yet another time, just the way it should be. The steak was also very good, though if the steak was the goal, we would have eaten in Pampas Steakhouse instead.

Chocolate Mousse - La Cucina

Before the dessert we were very satisfied with our food, and well pleased with this nice Italian restaurant in the middle of Vaci Utca. For us, the highlight of the dinner was though the dessert. We ate a Chocolate Mousse and a Panna Cotta, and they were both extremely good!

Leaving La Cucina after this meal I felt as if I had found a good Italian restaurant in Vaci Utca, and I would not be afraid to return for a meal sometime if I find myself hungry while shopping in Vaci Utca in Budapest!

Ferihegy Airport runs smoothly

Some new ash from the vulcano at Iceland is causing problems again at some airports around in Europe, especially from the northern parts of Italy (like Milano) to Munich in Germany. All flights from Budapest Ferihegy Airport runs as normal, except from departures to those areas mentioned above. So far, so good – and let us hope that it will stay that way in the nearest days and weeks and months as well!

We will stay updated, so in case something should happen, we will keep our readers up to date!

If you are in Budapest, why not visit a Budapest restaurant for a nice dinner today?
