Lower riverside roads open again

The topic says it all, but I guess I should write it again. The lower riverside roads are open for traffic again. This did not happen this morning, but they have in fact been open for some days. This means that things are a little bit better again for car owners in Budapest, but to claim that things are good would be a lie (because it has never been so)!

And, right now as this text is written there are clouds on the sky, and it has in fact been raining a little bit. Refreshing after some days with no clouds, and just a lot of sunshine!

We would love to help, but…

From time to time we receive emails from people requesting airport transfers, guided tours, winetasting and similar activities who type in email addresses not working and so on. That is always sad, as we are not able to give the help we would love to give!

A few hours ago we received an email from someone requesting a winetasting outside of Budapest, tomorrow! We would love to help, arrange and make this true, but then we sadly realized that the person did not use a valid email address. So much for the help we wanted to give!

Therefore, when you contact us make sure to give us a working email address, cellphone number – and help is on the way within shortly!

High quality in Cafe Kör

Cafe Kör - Main Course
Cafe Kör - Main Course

Cafe Kör is known to be one of the best restaurants in Budapest, and not without a reason. I recently had a chance to go there to eat dinner, and yet another time I was reminded about the difference between a poor, an average and a good restaurant.

We have recently eaten average food in Szeged Vendéglő, quite poor food at Fat Mo’s and then Cafe Kör was a breath of fresh air. Of course these restaurants are not meant to be compared either, but still… I ate together with four others and I am quite used to the problem that I do not like all the food being served. But, this time I was amazed! All food that was served was amazing, the staff smiled and served us patiently and the restaurant was packed throughout the entire evening. Without a table reservation it is almost impossible to get a table at Cafe Kör in the evenings.

In a time when most restaurants fight to get customers drop by, Cafe Kör simply draws people in, and they do it with great food and great service. The menu is everchanging so you have plenty of reasons to return.

Some people would say it is negative that they only accept payment in cash  and that the interior is unmodern. But, it draws people and if you have not been there, why not go to Cafe Kör tonight for a dinner there (or probably tomorrow, as you are late out with your table reservation) and enjoy the food, the service, the interior and everything. Feel free to share your thoughts on the restaurants with us later either here, or on the Cafe Kör page.

Last flood pictures for now

Two days ago, early Tuesday, the Danube peaked at 827cm. Now the river is moving back towards normal status, though very slowly. This means that the lower riverside roads will be opened up early next week only, probably! That is unfortunate for everyone with car, as the closed roads lead to even more lines and waiting for innercity drivers. Since the Danube is subsiding this is probably the last post with flood pictures for now, but we hope you will enjoy these pictures.

Even more water in the Danube – pictures

This Friday we posted some pictures showing how much water is in the Danube currently. Since then even more water has arrived, and now it is almost 8 metres above normal level. The carroad running down along the Danube has been closed since Friday afternoon and I guess from tomorrow it will be loads of traffic and long lines for those coming to Budapest with car.

The pictures below were taking Saturday evening, and you can see the Castle in the background, the Chain Bridge and so on!

Dinner at Szeged Vendéglő

Szeged Vendéglo outside
Szeged Vendéglo outside

Szeged Vendéglő is one of those typical Hungarian restaurants, looking quite okay from the outside, but still it took me more than seven years to eat there for the first time since I arrived to Budapest. Not long ago I finally went there to eat, and it was a quite enjoyable evening.

We started with Hortobagyi pancake and a Hungarian fish soup, followed by traditional Hungarian courses and apple and a sour cherry struddel for desert. Everything tasted well, though nothing caught us by surprise in any way. Nothing was extraordinary, except from maybe the folklore show that actual evening. In general I am not to fund of these kind of shows, and even less found of annoying musicians touring the restaurant to sell cd’s and maybe get some extra “tip” from some happy guests. The violinplayer did tour the restaurant, but the dancers and the singer of the folklore event did it with a big smile and it was in fact quite enjoyable!

The style of the restaurant is like a “csárda” outside Budapest somewhere, so it felt quite authentic.

For a video from the restaurant, visit our Szeged Vendéglő page.

Flood in Budapest – pictures

It is raining and raining in Hungary, and all across the country people are suffering because of all the water. Thousands have left their houses and people are “rescued” from their houses by helicopters, almost like action films. But it is reality. Budapest is a city always well prepared against floods, and there are not to serious problems around, but later today the lowest road along the Danube will probably be closed on both the Buda and the Pest side, which will make traffic unbearable, at least if it should happen in the middle of rush hours today.

Below you can see three pictures made today during a guided tour, showing the level of the Danube
