The worlds nicest bookshop is in Budapest

I am not sure if this is true, but today it was the official opening of the  Paris Big  Store located in the Andrássy Út. The building which has been a fashion shop throughout decades was closed in 1999, and today they opened it again. But this time it is not with clothes, but with tons of books and some wine!

I was inside there today (unfortunately I did not bring my camera) and it looks absolutely amazing. The facade has been renovated and it looks great from the outside as well. Inside you will immediately see wine on your right hand and the cashiers on your right side. As you walk straight ahead and up the stairs you will start to realize why this is beautiful. There is a bridge which you can walk across the two sides on the first floor of the building. The cafeteria which had a piano player playing nice music looks gorgeous and it felt almost like the entrance of the Hungarian State Opera… paintings in the roof, gold and beauty! I have not visited such a beautiful bookshop before at least!

Take a look yourself. The address is Andrássy út 35, and it is an Alexandra book store you can find inside the building.

Ps: Hopefully I will be able to make pictures later sometime as well, and when I do I will post it, so just follow our RSS-feed and check back later for updates!

New shopping center opening in Budapest

Today, November 11 at 11.00, a new shopping center will open in Budapest, the Allee Center. The center is located by the end station of tram line 4, Fehérvári Út, a great location on the Budaside and with loads of people who might be possible customers in the new center.

Inside the Allee Center you will not only find shops, but there is also a fitness club there, cinema opportunities, offices and flats for sale (though I guess most of them are sold already)!

We will try to get by tomorrow or sometime soon and later we will post some pictures and information about the place!

December 4: Night of the Baths in Budapest

Szechényi Fürdő
Szechényi Fürdő

We are currently working on giving our visitors an overview over open restaurants, thermal baths and so on December 24, 25 & 26. In the reply we got from Budapest Gyógyfürdői Zrt. they gave us the information we were looking for (which can be found in the “Christmas in Budapest” article) and some more information about the Night of the Baths which will be arranged December 4, 2009.

Night of the Baths 2009
The Night of the Baths is the evening/night where you can swim and enjoy the thermal water in Budapest until after midnight and enjoy nice programs as you do so.

In the Gellért Bath there will be music from the 90’s, in Rudás Fürdő there will be bellydancing and in Szechényi Fürdő there will be live music entertaining the guests.

I guess it will be quite cold outside on December 4, but if you stay in the water you will for sure enjoy even the outdoor pools at the Szechényi Thermal Bath (which by the way is extremely nice and has a great atmosphere after the sun has gone down)!

Christmas Market Vienna

Christmas Market Vienna
Christmas Market Vienna

Budapest and Vienna both have beautiful Christmas markets with great atmosphere. But now you do not have to choose whether to visit Budapest or Vienna, you can visit both.

Starting from November 21 we will arrange day trips from Budapest to the Christmas Market in Vienna. The day starts with you being picked up at your Budapest hotel. Then you will be taken to Vienna, where you can drink glue wine, shop and enjoy the Austrian capital, and in the evening you will be returned to your Budapest hotel again.

More information about the project can be found at Day trip to Christmas Market in Vienna.

Palinka and Sausage Festival this weekend

Pálinka
Pálinka

Budapest is simply a festival town. There is always something going on, and when one festival is finished, another starts. Not long ago there was some small Pálinka Festival by the Danube on the Pest side, before that visitors could participate in the Wine Festival located in the Castle Area… And then you have the Autumn Festival and we could keep on writing!

Whats important now, is that starting this Thursday and keeping it up till Sunday people in Budapest can visit the Pálinka and Sausage festival in the Castle area. The Hungarian sausages are not very famous, but many claim that they taste just as good as Mortadella, Tyrolean and Viennese sausages.

The Pálinka is a real Hungaricum, protected by law since 2004, and you are only allowed to call the drink Pálinka if produced according to strict laws and rules.  Below you can see some of them:

1. it has to be made 100-percent from fruits or herbs indigenous to the Carpathian Basin and grown in Hungary, or from pomace grown in Hungary, and does not contain any additives,
2. it has to be produced and bottled in Hungary,
3. it has to have an alcohol content between 37,5% and 86% ABV.

So if this sounds interesting, check it out. You can read more about the entrance fees and about the festival at our Palinka and Sausage Festival page.

Just some nice Budapest pictures

Chain Bridge Budapest
Chain Bridge Budapest

We love Budapest by night, and below you can see some pictures taken during an evening trip on the Danube with dinner and live gipsy music. The pictures only show Budapest, but the trip and the food was great as well. More information can be found on our Danube page.

As the autumn has come it is getting dark early in Budapest, so boat trips starting at 19.00 is an ideal timing for a good and nice, and maybe even romantic Danube trip in the dark.

Did you by the way know that Danube is the longest river in the European Union, and the second longest in Europe after the river Volga?
