Soon Elvis Presley will give name to a new square in Budapest. In 1957 Elvis supported the uprising of the Hungarians against the Communists, and due to this the local government of Budapest has decided to dedicate a square to Elvis Presley. There are 12 different squares participating for the title, and at www.budapest.hu you can vote for your own favorite (as far as we can see it is only possible to vote at the Hungarian version of the page).
Who knows, maybe next time you visit Budapest you can visit the Elvis Presley square as well?
In 2011 Shakira will do quite a lot of concerts around in Europe, and during her tour she will visit Bucharest, Belgrade, Zagreb, Graz, Paris and quite some other cities. But, if you would like to see and hear Shakira in Budapest, then you better come to the capital of Hungary May 5th, because that is when the Budapest Shakira concert will be arranged. The concert venue is the usual Papp Laszlo Budapest Sportarena, and it will packed again as Shakira enters the stage.
The Colombian singer Shakira who was born in 1977 has a whole lot of fans in Hungary. We have read that Shakira can speak Spanish, English, Portugese, as well as some Italian, Spanish and Arabic. The question is though if Shakira will speak even some Hungarian as she enters the stage in Budapest? At least a “szia” or maybe even “egeszségedre”… who knows? If we remember correct last time Santana was in Budapest several hundred thousand people were there, due to the fact that it was an outdoor, free concert. Sting concert in BudapestGordon Matthew Thomas Sumner will come to Budapest to have a concert on the last day of June 2011. I guess he is more famous as Sting, but Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner is his original name. Sting has been to Budapest several and his Budapest concerts always bring lots of people to town, so I guess it will do the same now.
The English artist Sting was born in 1951, which means that he will turn 60 years old in 2011. But, Sting is still going strong, and I guess everyone who comes to his Budapest concert will see and hear that.

For those really following the news in Budapest and Hungary this is old news, but for the rest of us this is still “hot” news. It all started when we could not buy the Palace Cinemas “cinema-card” last weekend in Campona. We did not understand why, but said “okay” and “no problem”. Then yesterday as we went to Palace Cinemas in WestEnd we asked: “How come?” They then explained us that Palace Cinema in WestEnd is not really Palace Cinema, but Cinema City… it is only the logos remaining. So, what has happened?
Cinema City has bought Palace Cinemas, at least most of the cinemas, and they will now slowly turn into Cinema City cinemas. This is not only valid for Hungary, but also for Czech Republic and Slovakia. Cinema City paid 28 million Euro for this, and now they will reign all by themselves in Budapest. Some of the former Palace Cinemas in Budapest will remain Palace Cinema, but the most important in West End, Mammut, Campona and MOM will turn into Cinema City.

Gluttonous Thursday is a great habit in Budapest and Hungary, so if you don’t know what it is yet, you have something to look forward to. Once a year in Hungary most restaurants join into this event and on Gluttonous Thursday they offer all drinks and food from the menu for half price.
If there is a restaurant you normally find expensive, then you might consider visiting it on Gluttonous Thursday when everything is at half price. There are quite some rules concerning Gluttonous Thursday, to protect the visitors, still there are normally complaints coming every year from visitors somehow tricked by different restaurants. Last year they even charged us full price for a brownie with ice Gluttonous Thursday, though the restaurant made up for that mistake later.
