A new week in Budapest

A new week has started in Budapest and on the political arena lots of things are happening. This Saturday Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany said that he felt as a hindrance to the progress of the nation (as there have been campaigns fighting for his resignation since the day he started his work as prime minister), so he opened up for the parlament to find a new prime minister instead of him. Due to this the forint is expected to become weaker, at least until a new prime minister has been found. So… a new week in Budapest has just started, and the political world is as always a big mess!

I read an article once where they commented on a picture of George Bush as he started to be a president in the USA and then they commented on a picture of George Bush as he left the oval office. Big differences. The same can be said about Ferenc Gyurcsany. It is not an easy job, and I do believe that ruling Hungary must be an extreme job… Four years as prime minister here is the same as 10 years of work elsewhere!

Luckily the attractions of Budapest are not affected by this! They are still beautiful so as a tourist it is just to come and enjoy the beauties of Budapest, and maybe enjoy a good Hungarian restaurant as well.

Most popular pictures last week

It is always interesting to check out what pictures are most popular in our Budapest guide. In almost every article we present there are pictures included, and especially in the categories restaurants, attractions and programs we try to include lots of pictures. It is therefore always fun to see what people have seen the most times during the last week.

Spring in Budapest

The spring is here, and sometimes the sun is even shining in Budapest. But, according to the weather forecasts bad weather is just around the corner. Some even claimed that snow might fall in Hungary later this week. Time will show, but I know there are many (and I include myself in that) who really long for the spring to blossom.

The spring is in fact one of the nicest periods of the year in Budapest, as it can become nice and warm, and often it allows you to walk in t-shirt outside already in March. But it seems as if that will not occur during this week at least.

The easter is also upcoming in Budapest, and we receive quite some emails concerning guided tours, apartments and table reservations. So if you are looking for help concerning easter we recommend you to contact us quickly, if not, you might contact us to late!

We wish all the readers of our Budapest blog a blessed and wonderful day (if its snowing, the sun is shining or whatever)!

15. March in Budapest, Hungary

A new national holliday is on the horizon, and in a few days Hungarian will celebrate March 15. But what is the day really about? Why do the Hungarians have a national holliday on this day?

History of Hungary

About March 15:
In 1848 the Hungarians started a revolution against the Habsburg empire, and they were fighting for liberation. It can be said that it started March 15, 1848, as Petöfi Sándor, one of the biggest Hungarian poets ever, held his speach in front of the National History Museum. After this the revolution continued, and it lasted for quite a long time, before it was finally stopped August 13, 1849. Some would also say that the final end was at October 6, 1849, as the Habsburgs exectued 13 generals from the 1848-1849 revolution. More about this in our article: “The 13 Martyrs of Arad – Clinking of beer mugs

Slumdog Millionaire in Budapest cinemas (review)

Slumdog Millionaire BudapestSome weeks ago I had never heard about this film. Then it won 8 Oscars, and everyone wants to see it. I watched the film in Mom Park and the cinema was almost filled up. My expectations were not big, as I did not really have much clue about the film and its story.

But as time went by and the film rolled on I realized; this is a great film. It is the story about the slumdogs in Mombai, India, and about Jamal taking part in the Indian version of “Who wants to be a millionaire?” We follow him, and I do not want to tell so much about the film, rather just advice everyone to go and watch it. Slumdog Millionaire is a clean, pure and nice film, but it also give insight into the life in India, and in the slum of India. Romance can of course be found in the film as well!

Some people have been discussing whether this film is better than for example “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.” For me that is not even a question; it is ten times better (if not hundred). And it is great that Slumdog Millionaire, which is not a typical Hollywood film, wins 8 Oscars!

Based on all of this, I advice you all to go visit a Budapest cinema, and see if you agree with me, as I give Slumdog Millionaire ten out of ten smileys!

Eros Luciano Walter Ramazzotti (born on October 28, 1963), known simply as Eros Ramazzotti, is an Italian singer and songwriter. Ramazzotti, who is one of the most popular artists in Italy is well known not only in most non English-speaking European countries but also in most of the Spanish-speaking world as he has released most of his albums in both Italian and Spanish. Since 1984, he has released nine studio albums, one EP, two compilation albums, two live albums as well as 34 singles, all of which have charted noticeably high in many European countries as well as in South and Central America. Ramazzotti has sold over 40 million records in his 23 years of career. The Italian star has done duets with several prestigious artists such as Cher, Tina Turner, Andrea Bocelli, Patsy Kensit, Anastacia, Joe Cocker, Luciano Pavarotti, Laura Pausini, and Ricky Martin Ramazzotti first gained international success in 1993, after the release of his Tutte storie, with which he managed to occupy the top five in every country wherein he had his previous albums released. After amassing six million in album sales of Tutte storie, in 1994, he got a record contract with BMG International. His success greatly lies beneath his unique voice which could be described as somewhat nasal but yet a bit aggressive at the same time and he always delivers catchy, melodic tunes throughout the refrains of his songs which are passionate autobiographical ballads often rich in soft-rock influence.

Baraka, Il Patio, Fridays and more

eating restaurant budapestAs we mentioned in our article called “Nice eating in Budapest” we visited the restaurant Baraka last Saturday. The restataurant is located near the Heroes Square, and is by many considered one of the best restaurants in Budapest. It is though a problem that we do not really enjoy the too upper-class restaurants, because often they only serve too special food always containing some kind of ingredient that I do not like. Eating at Baraka I did not really manage to eat by mashed potatoes, but except from that it was okay. Baraka looked great on the inside, and I know many people who have been there who praised it, so I guess I am the problem, and not the restaurant! (pictures from Baraka can be found at our Baraka page).

Surfing around I also noticed something that might be useful information! Rosinter Magyarország is the company responsible for the Il Patio, Planet Sushi and the T.G.I Fridays restaurants in Budapest. And, they are prolonging the Torkos Csütörtök with something they call: Torkos Hétfő, which means that you can eat at half price in these restaurants every Monday. It is though important to know that it is not half price on everything, but they have a special menu with different meals you can buy at half price. They do not necessarily give that menu to you as you arrive, so if you are interested ask the waiter!

Night shots from Heroes Square

Today is the last day of February, and the spring is about to come. We hope the pictures below can make your day more enjoyable, and maybe inspire you to come visit Budapest in 2009. If so, book your hotel/apartment, join us on a guided tour and make 2009 a beautiful year visiting Budapest!

The Heroes Square
The Heroes Square in Budapest was built for the millenium celebration in 1896. During the preparations for the millenium a lot of changes were done in the city, and one of them were the making of the Heroes Square. Some changes have taken place at the square since then, but we can for sure say that the square is one of the most beautiful places in Budapest.

At the pictures below taken from Heroes Square by night you can see the Archangel Gabriel, two colonnades with different statues (famous Hungarian personalities), the seven tribe leaders leading the Hungarians into Hungary in 896… and at both sides of the square you can visit a museum; the Museum of Fine Arts and the Art Hall.
