Hundred and hundreds of photographs that are worth seeing. At the exhibition of the best press photos of the year shocking and thought-provoking pictures can be seen from the venues of the Roma assassinations and of the mourning families, the everyday life at the Havadtő orphanage, Formula-1 driver Felipe Massa’s serious accident, the fight between extremist groups and the police, the court verdict in the case of the lynching at Olaszliszka, the change at the helm of government, moments from then lives of the civilians and the international military forces stationed in Afghanistan.

The exhibited works also depict the outstanding personalities of contemporary Hungarian literature, the most characteristic moments of the Balaton Sound, the back-stage secrets of body-builders, the 125 year old Budapest Opera House, the 120 year old Budapest Circus, the animals of urban life or the colorful ice-birds.

The exhibition to be on show for over a month is an adventure and a time capsule depicting the events of the previous year, 2009 that still influence our lives.

Snow and winter to visit Budapest

Not long ago I wrote that the spring has arrived in Budapest and that citizens and tourists in Budapest finally can enjoy sunshine and nice weather. This weekend the spring is going on holiday though, as the temperature is expected to go below 0 Celsius, and snow is expected to fall. According to met.hu we can expect the following temperatures this weekend:

Friday: -1 Celsius (snow is expected)
Saturday: -4 Celsius
Sunday: -4 Celsius
Monday: -7 Celsius
Tuesday: -2 Celsius

Not long ago I visited Barcelona, and of course we expected beautiful sunshine as we were there. We were not lucky though, as it was snowing like crazy, it was windy, and even CNN showed up to report about the especially bad weather striking the normally warm city along the Mediterranean sea.

Bread lángos at Vakvarjú

Lángos is a speciality in Hungary, and normally you buy this along the street and eat it with sour cream, garlic and other delicious stuff. It is fired in oil or fat, so it is not to healthy though. Kenyerlangos, or Bread lángos, is the version which is made in oven, so it is not so much oil stuck in your hands after eating it.

I always thought that I could only get hold of this on Hungarian national days and other special events, but then someone told me about Vakvarjú, a restaurant near the Opera where I can get it throughout the entire year. My friends who told me about it also told me that Vakvarjú was what they called the bread lángos in former days.

The bread lángos as I ate it in Vakvarjú was not something that should be included in a diet, but at least it was not fried in oil! For those who have never tasted anything like it, you should try to imagine a pizza, but with sour cream instead of tomato sauce on the doug. If it sounds interesting, try it yourself at Vakvarjú!

Best brownie in Budapest

Are you wondering where to eat the best brownie in Budapest? I am… I always enjoy trying out brownies as I go to restaurants and I almost end up disappointed in every place. Long time ago I remember someone telling me that Spoon has the best brownie in town. I tried, but I was not at all impressed! Then I heard that Negro has it… yet another disappointment. Then I tried it at Cream Cafe and Restaurant, and though the brownie portion I was served was extremely big, the taste was not!

I have for sure tried to eat brownies elsewhere as well, but so far I have to admit something that makes me kind of sad. Or I do not know, because in my eyes and in my opinion the best brownie in Budapest currently costs 420 Forints, and you can get it with vanilla ice cream in every single Burger King in town! I am not sure if the problem is with me, or what the problem is, but that is at least my thoughts on this matter.

Another similar case is the subject if onion rings. I read a comment on Pampas Steakhouse last week where someone wrote that their onion rings taste like the ones you get at Burger King (meaning that you almost don’t feel the onion inside). As I go to Pampas Steakhouse I order their onion rings almost every times, because they simply taste very good – exactly as I like them and love them. Maybe I am an anti-gourmet, or I don’t know, but the onion rings do not need to have an extreme onion taste – they just need to taste good!

Spring in Budapest – almost at least

The spring has almost arrived in Budapest and currently we are enjoying about 10 Celsius in the capital of Hungary (climate in Budapest). Some people claim that it will get colder by the end of the week, but we are for sure enjoying it now as the sun is smiling at our white bodies! As the sun shows up, the tourists starts to come and we can already feel and experience that more and more people are ready for guided tours and cool activities in Budapest. Compared to other big cities in Europe the Budapest temperature is quite good, in fact it is almost just as warm in Budapest as it is in Madrid, Spain.

As I am writing this text, the current temperature can be experienced in Europe:
Weather in Oslo: -4 celsius
Weather in Prague: 6 celsius
Weather in Bratislava: 14 celsius
Weather in Vienna: 14 celsius
Weather in Madrid: 10 celsius
Weather in Krakow: 7 celsius
