March 17th, 2011, a new steakhouse opened in Budapest, La Pampa. First we though this was to be a big opponent of Pampas Steakhouse, but later it turned out that the ownership is in fact the same. So, why open a new restaurant? Better to compete with yourself, than with someone else, probably! And La Pampa can in fact serve as an improvement of Pampas. The interior is much more modern and elegant, and this is probably more suitable for an important business dinner than Pampas. And since we quite often experienced that Pampas Steakhouse was fully booked during weekends, this can take some of the customers to La Pampa which will make it easier to get a table, maybe!
The menu is almost the same (with a few differences), and the prices are the same… and the quality, also the same!

Last week we visited the restaurant by many said to be the best restaurant in Budapest. It is extremely popular among tourists, and it has in fact been of the top of TripAdvisor’s list of Budapest restaurants for a long time. And what restaurant are we speaking of? It is not Gundel, Onyx or Costes… It is a small restaurant, in fact a very small restaurant with a great location near Vaci Utca.
The restaurant has an atmosphere very true to its name; Comme Chez Soi… it’s just like at home. The waitor’s are very polite, friendly and doing their uttermost to serve every guest with professionality and joy. The manager of the restaurant is also always around, making sure every guest are taken good care of. The quality is high and we were really satisfied after our stay in this restaurant.
But, there is something strange to it all. Because, as we first sat down in the restaurant it felt like nothing special, or maybe like a middle class restaurant somewhere. But, the joy of the waitor and the great service suddenly turned it all into a very delightful experience. The food did not disappoint us either, so we were satisfied and full as we went home after the visit.

Easter is here and larger and smaller groups use this holiday to visit Budapest. We have written a few advices to help you get the most out of your Easter here in Budapest.

2) The Szechenyi Thermal Bath in the City park is open every day throughout Easter
3) Normal shops are closed Sunday and Monday, but open every other day.
4) Restaurants have normal opening times and our wineprograms are available every day
5) The nicest church in Budapest, Saint Stephens Basilica, has services Friday at 18.00, Saturday at 18.00, Sunday at 10.00, 12.00, 18.00, 19.30 and Monday at 8.00, 10.00, 12.00 and 18.00.

Budapest is a large city and it can be quite nice to have a taxi bringing you to the restaurant as you go out for dinner. To help our visitors arrange with this, we have made the following offer:
Let us book a dinner for you in any of the restaurants below, and we will give you 50% discount on the taxi. This means that from 2-4 persons the taxi price is max 2500 HUF (in most cases 1500 HUF), while for groups between 5-8 persons the price will be max 3500 HUF (in most cases 2500 HUF). In 2011 a new Hungarian restaurant became the second Hungarian restaurant with a Via Michelin star. This time the restaurant is even more centrally located in Budapest, in fact on the main square of the inner city of Budapest, at Vörösmarty Square. Onyx is the name of the restaurant, and it is located in the same building as the famous Gerbeaud confectionary.
The pricelevel at Onyx might be a bit lower than at Costes, but the quality is the same high quality. If you would like a taste of the quality we can highly recommend the daily lunch menus available between 12.00 and 15.00 at quite reasonable prices.
We congratule Onyx and wish them all luck in pleasing their guests and keeping the quality high!
Since the end of 2010 Mátyás Pince has introduced a new program for their Friday evenings, Operetta evenings. The program starts around 20.30 and lasts for 45-60 minutes. Both before and after the visitors can enjoy traditional Hungarian gipsy music. The songs played are not famous international songs, but traditional Hungarian operetta songs.

Cafe Kör is known to be one of the best restaurants in Budapest, and not without a reason. I recently had a chance to go there to eat dinner, and yet another time I was reminded about the difference between a poor, an average and a good restaurant.
We have recently eaten average food in Szeged Vendéglő, quite poor food at Fat Mo’s and then Cafe Kör was a breath of fresh air. Of course these restaurants are not meant to be compared either, but still… I ate together with four others and I am quite used to the problem that I do not like all the food being served. But, this time I was amazed! All food that was served was amazing, the staff smiled and served us patiently and the restaurant was packed throughout the entire evening. Without a table reservation it is almost impossible to get a table at Cafe Kör in the evenings.
In a time when most restaurants fight to get customers drop by, Cafe Kör simply draws people in, and they do it with great food and great service. The menu is everchanging so you have plenty of reasons to return.
Some people would say it is negative that they only accept payment in cash and that the interior is unmodern. But, it draws people and if you have not been there, why not go to Cafe Kör tonight for a dinner there (or probably tomorrow, as you are late out with your table reservation) and enjoy the food, the service, the interior and everything. Dining Guide has just released the names of the ten best restaurants in Budapest, according to their own research and a lot of tasting made in different Budapest restaurants. Below you can find the list, and notice that the top 10 restaurants are listed alphabetically. Dining Guide will later present the final list presenting the best restaurants, but so far they shortened the list to only ten restaurants. Now they will visit these regularly, check out their food, and based on this vote for a winner, which we off course will write about later.
